Also, Bram Stoker's 'Dracula'. Classic piece of
literature sadly butchered in the recent version with
Gary Oldman.
People may mention 'Angela's Ashes' by Frank McCourt,
but I enjoyed the movie, although it wasn't as good as
the book.
I've also heard the movie 'Midnight in the Garden of
Good and Evil' was a flop. I didn't see it, but the
book was excellent.

Less Than Zero--Bratpack fodder which attempts the
complete opposite of the book's point
Looking for Mr. Goodbar--Hamhanded Richard Brooks hits
us with screaming overstatement and clumsy fantasy
sequences
Dracula--I thoroughly agree with the previous poster
about the Coppola version. Serviceable only as un-
intentional comedy. Oh, let's include the John Badham/
Frank Langella version too
The Manhunter (from Red Dragon)--Doesn't reach badness
until 2/3 through when Michael Mann's Miami Vice in-
stincts take over and everything becomes a rock video.
Which Leads us to.....
The Silence of the Lambs--Not a *bad* movie but dis-
appointingly pedestrian. And Brian Cox from the Manhunter
was a better Dr. Lecter!
One for the future....
Get Carter, the British gangster classic based on Ted
Lewis' "Jack's Return Home", is about to be remade--
set in Los Angeles and starring Sylvester Stallone.

"Strip Tease" by Carl Hiaasen -
tongue-in-cheek, funny, funny characters and a great suspense novel, but an
excruciatingly poor rendition in film form. She played the character much
too straight and (I think) ruined it all.

I agree with Cindy but would say that The Shawshank Redemption made from a King
short story is a very fine movie.
Another flop in my opinion is the movie version of The Handmaid's Tale.
Interesting art direction but otherwise pretty poor rendition of the story and
the relationships.
